So you have had enough of the kind of jewelry clasp that has been in use and are now looking for the magnetic jewelry clasp?

You may think that this will be a simple exercise, but there are some decisions to be made as there are a variety of these magnetic clasps for jewelry.

There are silver magnetic clasps, silver plated, gold plated clasp, gold filled magnetic clasp and also magnetic bead clasps. These are as secure as any normal type of clasp, but much easier to put on the jewelry and take them off.

Types of Jewelry Clasps

Before the magnetic jewellery clasps came into the scene there were already many different types of jewelry clasps, which are described here.

Lobster Claw Clasps. To operate this, you push the lever back to open the claw and release it to shut. Make sure that the claw closes completely and is reasonably easy to open, when purchasing this item or jewelry using the lobster claw clasp. People with arthritis or limited use of their fingers or hands will probably have difficulty using this.

Hook and Eye Clasps. This is a very simple system where the hook on one side is inserted into the “eye” or circle which is on the other side. The hook and eye clasp is very easy to use but not a very secure way to fasten a bracelet ot necklace.

Box clasps. This is a “V” shaped tab on one side is inserted into a box that is on the other side, and the tab clicks into the box. You need to press on the sides of the tab that is outside the box to pull out the tab. The shape of the box can vary and is not necessarily always a square or rectangle although these are called box clasps.

Toggle Clasps. This consists of a square or circle section and another bar section. Turn the bar at a 90 degree angle to the circle and insert it to connect.  Besides using for jewelry, the toggle clasp is also used for other purposes.

The toggle clasp works on the basis that the bar is slightly longer than the width of the circle, normally a proportion of about four to three. This makes it possible for the bar to go through and then lay flat with sufficient overlap so that the bar does not slip through accidentally.

 

Slide Lock Clasp. The slide lock clasp has two tubes,one a little smaller in diameter than the other. The smaller of the tubes slides into the larger one and is twisted in a clockwise direction to hold it in place.
